Finding secret offshore vehicles in the Panama Papers
[Download the data appendix]
We exploit one of the largest data leaks to date to study whether and how firms use secret offshore vehicles. From the leaked data, we identify 338 listed firms as users of secret offshore vehicles and document that these vehicles are used to finance corruption, avoid taxes, and expropriate shareholders. Overall, the leak erased $174 billion in market capitalization among implicated firms. Use the Data Appendix to identify the 338 firms.
The Life Cycle of Family Ownership
[Download the data appendix]
The internet appendix for our working paper "The Life Cycle of Family Ownership: International Evidence" (with Colin Mayer, Julian Franks and Paolo Volpin) describes in detail how the TOP 4,000, the FAMILY LISTED and the ALL FIRM samples are constructed from AMADEUS and other sources. It also shows a detailed breakdown of the corrections we make to the data in Faccio and Lang (2002), JFE.
